This battle had been waiting for several months as other thinks intruded, not least building this site. In the perpetual quest yet another set of rules had been acquired. 'Balance of Power' by Mark Sims of Crusader Publishing. Andy and I decided to give them a go and I decided to resolve the long awaited (at least by me) 2nd Battle of Hoy.

1866 Campaign Notes 1:

The big wargame project is to run a solo 1866 campaign. I plan to use “Trapped Like a fox” (TLaF) As the campaign rules but to use “Tin Soldier in Action” (TSiA)for the tabletop. As this is a solo game I will also be using “Mythic” to drive the various ‘players’ - Army and some Corps commanders at the strategic level and “Adjutant Introuvable” (AI) at the tabletop level.

The news was bad. Mikal sat studing the various reports from the north. His ambassador to Keller was reporting that the Chancellor was professing an undying desire for peace. At the same time Freiherr Von Elmar Thierse was claiming a decisive victory over Kellerite forces but admitting that Klien Hoysee had been occupied! What was he to do? Leo Hagemeister was pleased. If all went well he would be the commander history would remember as turning the Kellerite position. He had no illusion that he had been chosen for any particular skill but simply the happy circumstance that his was the regiment on the extreme right of the Hoysee line. To describe the Break up of this political monstrosity as a slow burn would be an understatement. Formed in the late medieval period from disparate small Counts and Baronies who's only apparent point of agreement was a distrust of any one else. Firstly, Basic Impetus 2 was released and Andy and I changed focus from the 19th century to the ancient and classical world.
Interlude Chancellors Office Bishopric of Keller

Smoke hung thickly in richly decorated room as the door opened and a functionary admitted a small fat man. Dressed in his robes the Bishop of Keller looked more like a Christmas tree burble than the ruler of one of the most powerful states in the region, and in truth that was exactly what he was, a burble if not for a Christmas tree then for the man who sat behind the large desk which dominated what was also a large room. Thickly jowled and musta…

“This is a disaster!” Louis de Plein, Grand Marquis of Flamboyance gestured towards the three documents strewn on his desk. One in elegant script with the arms of Hoysee, another equally fine from Nordsbocco and a rather plainer document from General Morace commanding the invasion forces arrayed against Nordsbocco. The other men in the room waited for the Grand Marquis to continue, they were disappointed when he didn't it meant they had to respond.

The Situation:
CHANCELLOR'S OFFICE KELLER:
Chancellor Otto leaned back and smiled. He had wanted to test his new army for awhile but needed the proper opportunity. Now here it was, nothing too difficult but enough to test the mobilisation and how the high command could handle itself. Pity that a test of its new breech-loading rifles and artillery would have to wait but beggars cannot be choosers.

We are all I think on a quest for ‘the perfect rules’. I also think that is a never-ending quest, not least as or opinion of what constitutes ‘the prefect rules’ keeps changing. That should not stop us in fact this impossibility should spur us on. To this end I decided to put new rules sets to a scientific test. Basically I have decided to devise and play a standard scenario which gives me a point of comparison.

To be clear I have played this scenario before under these rules. That time it was an ACW setting. As however these are my 'go to' rules at the moment I thought I would start with them as a type of basis.

Tin Soldier in Action does have some issues, mainly I think down to the translation from German to English. So I have developed a number of house rules to resolve these issues. For this experiment however I revered to the original version. I stopped pla…

It was raining. Not one of those heavy torrential downpours but a steady drizzle which managed to somehow get in everywhere. Grand Duke Mikal Pastor IV stood watching his men trudge through the mud which caused by the heavy traffic which passed his command post on their way to the front.
The Significant Action

One of the issues with playing a wargame is size. If you want to play a campaign it is impractical to play every battle and action. There is not enough time to play all the minor actions not enough figure to field all the disparate forces required nor enough table space. My resolution to these problems is 'The Significant Action'.

The Bishopric Keller lies across the Grand River (Danube) to the North of Hoysee and Flamboyance. The Bishopric has existed since medieval times and its fortunes have varied under its various bishops. With the suppression of powerful landholding families the local minor nobility and the merchant class has developed a more egalitarian society than most other states, however a tension has developed between the urbanised towns and the more rural hinterland.
